Buying Isopods Online in India: What to Know
Isopods are small land crustaceans that live in the soil and leaf litter of a bioactive terrarium. They eat decaying plant matter, mould and waste, which keeps the enclosure clean and the soil healthy. Many keepers now keep them as pets in their own right, because rare morphs come in striking colours and patterns. Most species need little more than a ventilated tub, moist substrate, leaf litter, a calcium source and a hiding spot.
Best Isopods for Beginners
If this is your first culture, start with a species that breeds quickly and forgives small mistakes with moisture and temperature:
- Powder Orange (₹40) and Powder Blue (₹50): fast breeders and an excellent cleanup crew for any terrarium.
- Dairy Cow (₹90): a large black-and-white species that is easy to spot and very hardy.
- Orange Dalmatian and Oreo Crumble (₹100–₹120): colourful morphs that are just as easy to keep.
- Dwarf White (₹50): tiny, so they suit small or closed terrariums and go well with springtails.
Rolling Isopods: Armadillidium
Armadillidium species curl into a tight ball when disturbed, which makes them a favourite with children and first-time keepers. Our range includes the classic Vulgare and the colourful Vulgare St. Lucia, the striped Zebra and Yellow Zebra, the painted Corfu, the bold Armadillidium vulgare Orange, the patterned Peraccae and Gestroi, the spiky Cristarmadillidium muricatum 'Pineapple', and the collector-grade Klugii.
Cubaris Isopods in India
Cubaris are the collector end of the hobby. Many originate in Thailand and Southeast Asia, prefer higher humidity, and breed more slowly than beginner species, which is why prices are higher. Easy entry points are the Cubaris murina morphs such as Little Sea, Glacier, Orange, Papaya and Anemone. For collectors we keep Panda King (plus the Red and Pink lines), White Shark, Jupiter, Red Pak Chong, Amber Ducky, Caramel, Daxin, Lemon Blue, Cherry Blossom, Rubber Ducky (preorder), and the Cappuccino family in its classic, Orange and Pink lines (the last two on preorder).
Porcellio Isopods
Porcellio are larger, active isopods that handle drier setups better than Cubaris. Look at Sevilla and its Caramel morph, Porcellio werneri, Scaber Orange and Porcellio scaber 'Ghost', Porcellio haasi 'High Yellow' and Porcellio bolivari 'Yellow Ghost'.
Isopod Prices in India
Our isopods are priced per individual. Beginner species cost ₹40–₹150 each, mid-range morphs ₹150–₹400, and collector Cubaris and Porcellio ₹450–₹1,000. Most keepers start a culture with 6 or more individuals of one species. If you're setting up for the first time, our isopod supplies range has ventilated tubs, substrate, leaf litter and calcium blocks to get the enclosure ready.
Keeping Isopods in Indian Weather
Heat is the biggest risk for isopods in most of India. Keep cultures in the coolest room of the house, away from windows and direct sun, and make sure the tub has a moist side and a dry side so isopods can choose. Avoid sealing the lid completely in summer, because a hot, airless tub can kill a culture in a day. For detailed setup and species care, read our isopod care guide.
