The Greek Shield isopod: a flat, wide, "skirted" body unlike any other species. A distinctive Mediterranean isopod for patient keepers.
- Unique flat, skirted "shield" shape
- Mediterranean species for semi-dry setups
- Slow breeder, limited availability
Porcellio werneri is known as the Greek Shield isopod for its flattened body and wide, skirt-like edges that make it look like a living shield. It comes from Greece and the surrounding Mediterranean and prefers semi-dry, well-ventilated conditions with a damp retreat. It grows and breeds slowly, so colonies take several months to build. It is slightly more demanding than beginner species, but its shape makes it a standout in any collection.
Premium collection: these are slower-breeding, collector-grade species. Cultures are limited and shipped as a mixed-age group of 6 or more, which gives you the best chance of both sexes and a breeding start. Keep them in a stable, shaded room, below 28°C.
Well-ventilated tub with nutrient-rich substrate, calcium (crushed limestone or cuttlebone) and constant leaf litter. Keep one side damp and the rest dry. Feed a varied plant-based diet with weekly protein. Avoid disturbing the culture often, and keep it in the coolest room in summer, as it prefers 25°C or below.

Shipping & Live-Arrival Guarantee
We ship Monday to Wednesday only, so your isopods never sit in a courier hub over the weekend. During peak summer (April to June) we may hold orders for a cooler shipping window and will message you on WhatsApp before dispatch. Every order is covered by our live-arrival guarantee: if any isopods arrive dead, send an unboxing video within 2 hours of delivery and we will replace them or refund you for those pieces.
Acclimation Tips on Arrival
- Open the box as soon as it arrives and keep it out of direct sun.
- Gently tip the moss and isopods into their enclosure; do not pick them out one by one.
- Mist one corner, offer leaf litter and a small piece of vegetable, and leave them undisturbed for 48 hours.
- Some stress losses in the first week are normal for any live shipment; a stable, lightly humid setup keeps them to a minimum.
