In the wild, isopods live on and in fallen leaves, and leaf litter remains the most important part of their diet in captivity. As the leaves soften and break down, isopods graze on them steadily, and the layer also gives them cover from light. A good layer of leaf litter keeps your colony fed between vegetable feedings and makes the enclosure look natural.
- Scatter a layer over the substrate surface, covering at least half of it.
- Push a few leaves into the damp side so they soften faster.
- Top up whenever you can see the substrate through the layer.
- Keep it as a constant food source alongside vegetables and protein.
Care level: Beginner. Maintain stable humidity and temperature appropriate for this species, provide adequate leaf litter/cover, and avoid sudden environmental swings.
