Isopods spend most of their lives in and on their substrate. They burrow into it to moult, hide in it from light and feed on the decaying organic matter it contains. This is the substrate we use for our own cultures, made to hold moisture on the damp side while still drying out on the other, so you can build the moisture gradient isopods need. It works for both isopod cultures and bioactive terrariums.
- Spread 4–7 cm of substrate in your tub or terrarium.
- Moisten one half until it is damp but not muddy; leave the other half drier.
- Top with leaf litter and add hides.
- Top up or replace part of the substrate every few months as isopods break it down.
Care level: Beginner. Maintain stable humidity and temperature appropriate for this species, provide adequate leaf litter/cover, and avoid sudden environmental swings.
