  • Compact globe shape with 'chin' bumps
  • Flowers easily, even when small
  • Tolerates bright light without full sun

Gymnocalycium, known as chin cactus for the small chin-like bumps below each spine cluster, is one of the most rewarding cacti for beginners. Plants stay small and round, and many flower freely from a young age in white, pink or red. Unlike most cacti, they come from grasslands where they grow among other plants, so they are happy in bright light without full sun. This makes them one of the best cacti for Indian balconies and bright windows.

Light

Bright indirect light or morning sun. Harsh midday sun turns it reddish-brown.

Watering

Water when the mix is dry. Slightly more water than desert cacti during spring and summer growth.

Soil & Pot

Gritty mix: about 60–70% mineral (coarse river sand, pumice or perlite, brick chips) and 30–40% coco peat or compost. Terracotta pot with a drainage hole.

Monsoon Care

Keep under a roof or in a bright room from June to September. Water only when the mix is bone dry, and keep air moving around the plant.

Feeding

Quarter-strength cactus fertiliser (low nitrogen) once a month, February–May and October–November. None during monsoon and peak summer.

Repotting

Every 2 years in spring; remove offsets to grow new plants.

Watch Out For

Root mealybugs (white fluff on roots), rot from wet soil, sun scorch.
