- Snake-like radiating arms
- Thick central body
- Dramatic, sculptural form
Euphorbia caput-medusae grows a thick, partly buried central stem from which many slender, snake-like arms spread outwards, creating the look of Medusa's hair. In spring, small fringed flowers appear near the tips of the arms. Larger plants have a fuller crown of arms and a more developed central body. It needs bright light to keep its arms short and tight, and very good drainage.
Light
Bright light with morning sun keeps arms short; in low light they stretch and flop.
Watering
Water when dry; reduce sharply during monsoon.
Soil & Pot
Very gritty mix: 70–80% mineral (pumice, perlite, coarse sand, brick chips) with a little coco peat. Small terracotta pot with a drainage hole. A wide pot shows off the arms.
Monsoon Care
Keep under a roof or in a bright room from June to September. Water only when the mix is bone dry, and keep air moving around the plant.
Feeding
Quarter-strength cactus fertiliser (low nitrogen) once a month, February–May and October–November. None during monsoon and peak summer.
Handling
Wear gloves; irritant latex.
Watch Out For
Stretched arms in low light, rot in the central body.
