The famous Japanese-bred form of Astrophytum asterias, covered in dense, bold white flecks and patches. A true showpiece cactus.

  • Dense white flecking — every plant unique
  • Spineless dome shape
  • Prized Japanese collector cultivar

Super Kabuto is a Japanese cultivar of Astrophytum asterias, bred over decades for heavy white flecking. Its dark green dome is covered in thick white dots, bands or patches, so every plant has its own pattern. It shares the species' spineless, segmented shape and large yellow flowers with a red centre. Super Kabuto is one of the most prized cacti among collectors and makes a striking centrepiece.

Light

Bright light with soft morning sun. Strong afternoon sun can scorch the skin between the white flecks.

Watering

Water thoroughly only when the mix is completely dry. Overwatering is the main cause of loss.

Soil & Pot

Gritty mix: about 60–70% mineral (coarse river sand, pumice or perlite, brick chips) and 30–40% coco peat or compost. Terracotta pot with a drainage hole. Gravel top-dressing helps keep the base dry.

Monsoon Care

Keep under a roof or in a bright room from June to September. Water only when the mix is bone dry, and keep air moving around the plant.

Feeding

Quarter-strength cactus fertiliser (low nitrogen) once a month, February–May and October–November. None during monsoon and peak summer.

Handling

Do not rub or spray the body; the white flecks wipe off and do not grow back. Lift it by the pot, not the plant.

Watch Out For

Base rot, sunburn, mealybugs hiding in the woolly areoles.
