Mammillaria is the largest group of cacti, mostly from Mexico, and one of the most rewarding for beginners. Plants are small and rounded or clustering, covered in fine spines, and many produce a ring or crown of small flowers around the top. This listing is for an assorted species from current stock. Large plants are mature clusters with more heads and flowering potential.
Light
Bright light with morning sun helps flowering.
Watering
Water thoroughly when the mix is dry.
Soil & Pot
Gritty mix: about 60–70% mineral (coarse river sand, pumice or perlite, brick chips) and 30–40% coco peat or compost. Terracotta pot with a drainage hole.
Monsoon Care
Keep under a roof or in a bright room from June to September. Water only when the mix is bone dry, and keep air moving around the plant.
Feeding
Quarter-strength cactus fertiliser (low nitrogen) once a month, February–May and October–November. None during monsoon and peak summer.
Flowering Tip
A drier, cooler rest in December–January with very little water helps it flower in spring.
Watch Out For
Overwatering, mealybugs between spines.
