Aloe variegata, now also called Gonialoe variegata, is a small aloe with thick, triangular leaves arranged in three neat stacked rows. Each leaf is dark green with irregular white bands and a white edge, giving the tiger or partridge-breast look. In winter and spring it sends up spikes of tubular coral-red flowers. It is compact, tough and suits sunny windowsills and balconies.
Light
Bright light with morning sun. Leaves turn reddish in strong sun — this is stress, so add light shade.
Watering
Water when dry, at the soil. Do not let water sit in the leaf rosette.
Soil & Pot
Gritty mix: about 60–70% mineral (coarse river sand, pumice or perlite, brick chips) and 30–40% coco peat or compost. Terracotta pot with a drainage hole.
Monsoon Care
Keep under a roof or in a bright room from June to September. Water only when the mix is bone dry, and keep air moving around the plant.
Feeding
Quarter-strength cactus fertiliser (low nitrogen) once a month, February–May and October–November. None during monsoon and peak summer.
Propagation
Separate offsets that grow around the base in spring.
Watch Out For
Rot from water in the rosette, mealybugs between leaves.
