A rare Ethiopian Euphorbia that mimics a small chin cactus, with a rounded, ribbed body. A true collector's rarity, own-root or grafted.
- Rare cactus-mimic Euphorbia
- Compact, ribbed globe
- Own-root or grafted
Euphorbia gymnocalycioides gets its name from its resemblance to the Gymnocalycium cactus: a small, rounded, ribbed body with a neat, compact form. It comes from Ethiopia and is rarely seen in collections. It grows very slowly and needs very good drainage and careful watering. Grafted plants are sturdier and easier for new growers, while own-root plants are the prized natural form.
Light
Bright light with soft morning sun.
Watering
Sparing. Let the mix dry completely; own-root plants rot easily.
Soil & Pot
Very gritty mix: 70–80% mineral (pumice, perlite, coarse sand, brick chips) with a little coco peat. Small terracotta pot with a drainage hole.
Monsoon Care
The riskiest season. Keep fully out of rain, water very rarely (every 3–4 weeks at most) and only on warm, sunny days.
Own-Root vs Grafted
Grafted plants grow faster on a strong rootstock and are more forgiving; own-root plants are slower and more delicate.
Handling
Wear gloves; irritant latex.
Watch Out For
Soft spots or rot, mealybugs, cold below 12°C.
