- Spineless blue-green button
- White woolly tufts
- Very slow, compact collector plant
Lophophora is a small, spineless cactus that grows as a soft, rounded, blue-green button with tufts of white wool instead of spines. It has a thick taproot that stores water, and produces small pale pink to white flowers from the crown. It grows very slowly and stays small for many years. Sold strictly as an ornamental plant for collectors; not for consumption.
Light
Bright light; protect from harsh afternoon sun, which turns it reddish.
Watering
Water sparingly; its taproot stores water and rots if kept wet.
Soil & Pot
Gritty mix: about 60–70% mineral (coarse river sand, pumice or perlite, brick chips) and 30–40% coco peat or compost. Terracotta pot with a drainage hole. Use a deep pot for the taproot.
Monsoon Care
Keep under a roof or in a bright room from June to September. Water only when the mix is bone dry, and keep air moving around the plant.
Feeding
Quarter-strength cactus fertiliser (low nitrogen) once a month, February–May and October–November. None during monsoon and peak summer.
Repotting
Rarely needed; every 3–4 years in a deeper pot.
Watch Out For
Taproot rot, mealybugs in the woolly tufts.
