Euphorbia piscidermis is a tiny, globe-shaped Euphorbia from Ethiopia whose surface is covered in spiralling, overlapping scales that look like fish skin, which is where its name comes from. It is extremely slow growing and rare in cultivation. Own-root plants are the most valued but need careful watering; grafted plants grow faster and are more forgiving, making them a good entry point. Like all Euphorbias it contains irritant latex.
Light
Bright light with gentle morning sun; shade from harsh afternoon sun.
Watering
Own-root plants are very prone to rot — water lightly and only when fully dry. Grafted plants follow the rootstock and take a little more water.
Soil & Pot
Very gritty mix: 70–80% mineral (pumice, perlite, coarse sand, brick chips) with a little coco peat. Small terracotta pot with a drainage hole.
Monsoon Care
The riskiest season. Keep fully out of rain, water very rarely (every 3–4 weeks at most) and only on warm, sunny days.
Own-Root vs Grafted
Own-root: true natural form, slower, rarer, more delicate. Grafted: sits on a stronger rootstock, grows faster and tolerates mistakes better.
Handling
Wear gloves; the latex irritates skin and eyes.
Watch Out For
Rot at the base or graft line, mealybugs between scales, cold below 12°C.
