- Spineless star shape with 5 ribs
- Silvery-speckled skin
- One of the easiest Astrophytum
Bishop's Cap is a classic collector's cactus with a striking geometric shape. It usually has five broad ribs, giving a star-like outline from above, and its skin is covered in tiny white scales that give it a silvery-grey look. It has no spines, which makes it safe to handle. Older plants grow into short columns and produce scented, glossy yellow flowers from the top. It is one of the easier Astrophytum species to grow.
Light
Bright light with some direct morning sun keeps it compact. Shade from harsh afternoon sun.
Watering
Water thoroughly, then wait until the mix is completely dry.
Soil & Pot
Gritty mix: about 60–70% mineral (coarse river sand, pumice or perlite, brick chips) and 30–40% coco peat or compost. Terracotta pot with a drainage hole.
Monsoon Care
Keep under a roof or in a bright room from June to September. Water only when the mix is bone dry, and keep air moving around the plant.
Feeding
Quarter-strength cactus fertiliser (low nitrogen) once a month, February–May and October–November. None during monsoon and peak summer.
Repotting
Every 2–3 years when the plant nearly touches the pot edge.
Watch Out For
Rot from the base after heavy rain, sunburn patches, mealybugs at the crown.
