A compact rosette succulent that grows happily indoors. One of the easiest succulents for desks, windowsills and low-light spots.
- Compact rosette
- Grows well indoors in bright indirect light
- Very low maintenance
Haworthias are small rosette succulents from South Africa, loved for their neat shapes and patterned or translucent leaves. Unlike most succulents, they grow in the shade of rocks and shrubs in the wild, so they cope well with bright indirect light indoors. They stay compact, produce offsets around the base and need little care. A perfect succulent for beginners, offices and small spaces.
Light
Bright indirect light. Too much sun turns leaves red-brown; too little makes them stretch.
Watering
Water when the mix is dry. Less often in monsoon.
Soil & Pot
Gritty mix: about 60–70% mineral (coarse river sand, pumice or perlite, brick chips) and 30–40% coco peat or compost. Terracotta pot with a drainage hole.
Monsoon Care
Keep under a roof or in a bright room from June to September. Water only when the mix is bone dry, and keep air moving around the plant.
Feeding
Quarter-strength cactus fertiliser (low nitrogen) once a month, February–May and October–November. None during monsoon and peak summer.
Propagation
Separate offsets with a few roots in spring and pot them separately.
Watch Out For
Mushy leaves (overwatering), mealybugs deep in the rosette.
