- Blue-grey ribbed stems
- Tough and heat tolerant
Euphorbia horrida, the African milk barrel, is a cactus look-alike from South Africa with thick, deeply ribbed blue-grey stems and rows of long, hard spines (actually old flower stalks). Over time it branches into an impressive sculptural clump. It is tough, heat tolerant and easy to grow, but like all Euphorbias it contains an irritant milky latex.
Light
Bright light with plenty of sun.
Watering
Water when dry; less in monsoon and winter.
Soil & Pot
Very gritty mix: 70–80% mineral (pumice, perlite, coarse sand, brick chips) with a little coco peat. Small terracotta pot with a drainage hole.
Monsoon Care
Keep under a roof or in a bright room from June to September. Water only when the mix is bone dry, and keep air moving around the plant.
Feeding
Quarter-strength cactus fertiliser (low nitrogen) once a month, February–May and October–November. None during monsoon and peak summer.
Handling
Wear gloves; the white latex irritates skin and eyes.
Watch Out For
Rot at the base after wet spells, mealybugs between ribs.
