  • Soft, feathery white spines
  • Forms fluffy clusters
  • Gentle to touch

Mammillaria plumosa is one of the most charming cacti: its spines are fine and feathery, forming a soft white coat that completely covers the plant. It grows into clusters of fluffy balls that slowly spread into a mound. In winter it can produce small cream to pink flowers. It needs very good drainage and must be watered from below or at the soil only, as water trapped in the feathery spines can cause rot.

Light

Bright light with morning sun keeps the spines dense and white.

Watering

Water at the soil or from below; never pour water over the feathery spines. Let it dry fully between waterings.

Soil & Pot

Gritty mix: about 60–70% mineral (coarse river sand, pumice or perlite, brick chips) and 30–40% coco peat or compost. Terracotta pot with a drainage hole. A wide, shallow pot suits its clustering habit.

Monsoon Care

Keep under a roof or in a bright room from June to September. Water only when the mix is bone dry, and keep air moving around the plant. Never leave it in the rain.

Feeding

Quarter-strength cactus fertiliser (low nitrogen) once a month, February–May and October–November. None during monsoon and peak summer.

Repotting

Every 2–3 years when the cluster fills the pot; offsets can be separated.

Watch Out For

Rot under the feathers, mealybugs hidden in the spines.
