Obregonia denegrii is a rare cactus from a small area of Tamaulipas, Mexico, and the only species in its genus. It grows as a flat rosette of overlapping, triangular, leaf-like tubercles arranged in a spiral, so it looks like a small artichoke. It produces white flowers from its woolly centre. It is very slow growing and has a thick taproot, so it needs a deep pot and careful watering. Larger 3-inch plants represent many years of growth.
Light
Bright light with gentle morning sun.
Watering
Sparing; the taproot stores water and rots if kept wet.
Soil & Pot
Gritty mix: about 60–70% mineral (coarse river sand, pumice or perlite, brick chips) and 30–40% coco peat or compost. Terracotta pot with a drainage hole. Use a deep pot for the taproot.
Monsoon Care
Keep under a roof or in a bright room from June to September. Water only when the mix is bone dry, and keep air moving around the plant.
Feeding
Quarter-strength cactus fertiliser (low nitrogen) once a month, February–May and October–November. None during monsoon and peak summer.
Repotting
Rarely; handle the taproot gently.
Watch Out For
Taproot rot, mealybugs in the woolly centre.
