A rare, spineless succulent with thick grey-white stems patterned like damask fabric. A sculptural collector's plant from a single remote island.
- Rare island endemic
- Spineless, pale damask-patterned stems
- Sculptural collector plant
Euphorbia abdelkuri grows naturally only on the small island of Abd al Kuri in the Socotra archipelago. Its thick, branching, spineless stems are covered in a pale grey-white skin with a subtle damask-like pattern, giving it an almost sculpted look. It is not a cactus but a succulent Euphorbia, and like all Euphorbias it contains a milky, irritant latex. It needs heat, bright light and very sharp drainage, and is highly prized by collectors.
Light
Bright light with morning sun. Acclimatise slowly to stronger sun to avoid scorch.
Watering
Very sparing. Water only when the mix has been dry for several days. Very prone to rot.
Soil & Pot
Very gritty mix: 70–80% mineral (pumice, perlite, coarse sand, brick chips) with a little coco peat. Small terracotta pot with a drainage hole.
Monsoon Care
The riskiest season. Keep fully out of rain, water very rarely (every 3–4 weeks at most) and only on warm, sunny days.
Feeding
Very light feeding (quarter strength) twice a year in spring at most.
Handling
Wear gloves. Cut stems bleed white latex that irritates skin and eyes.
Watch Out For
Soft or dark spots on stems (rot) — act immediately; cold below 12°C; overwatering.
