  • Finger-like stems with golden spines
  • Clusters quickly
  • Very easy to propagate

Mammillaria elongata, the ladyfinger cactus, grows as clusters of slender, finger-shaped stems covered in neat golden-yellow spines. It branches freely and quickly fills a pot, forming an attractive mound, and produces small cream flowers in spring. It is one of the easiest cacti to grow and propagate: any detached finger roots readily.

Light

Bright light with morning sun keeps stems short and spines golden. Low light makes them thin and stretched.

Watering

Water when dry; it tolerates a little more water than many cacti in summer.

Soil & Pot

Gritty mix: about 60–70% mineral (coarse river sand, pumice or perlite, brick chips) and 30–40% coco peat or compost. Terracotta pot with a drainage hole. A wide pot suits the clustering habit.

Monsoon Care

Keep under a roof or in a bright room from June to September. Water only when the mix is bone dry, and keep air moving around the plant.

Propagation

Twist off a finger, let it dry for 3–5 days, then lay it on dry gritty mix; it roots in 2–3 weeks.

Feeding

Quarter-strength cactus fertiliser (low nitrogen) once a month, February–May and October–November. None during monsoon and peak summer.

Watch Out For

Stretching in low light, mealybugs between stems.
