A crested cactus that grows in wavy, fan-shaped folds like coral or a brain. Sold as a single plant or a full clump of 8+ heads.

  • Wavy, brain-like crested growth
  • Easy and fast for a crest
  • Single plant or 8+ head clump

Cristate (crested) cacti form when the growing point stretches into a line instead of a single point, creating wavy, fan-like or brain-shaped folds. This crested Echinopsis is easy to grow and makes a striking sculptural piece. Single plants are great for small pots and gifts, while the full clump of more than eight heads makes an instant statement plant. Occasionally a crest produces a normal round stem; remove it to keep the crested form.

Light

Bright light with morning sun keeps the crest tight and compact.

Watering

Water thoroughly when dry; avoid water sitting in the folds.

Soil & Pot

Gritty mix: about 60–70% mineral (coarse river sand, pumice or perlite, brick chips) and 30–40% coco peat or compost. Terracotta pot with a drainage hole.

Monsoon Care

Keep under a roof or in a bright room from June to September. Water only when the mix is bone dry, and keep air moving around the plant. Folds trap moisture, so airflow matters.

Feeding

Quarter-strength cactus fertiliser (low nitrogen) once a month, February–May and October–November. None during monsoon and peak summer.

Keeping the Crest

If a normal round stem appears, cut it off cleanly so the plant keeps growing in its crested form.

Watch Out For

Rot or mould in the folds, mealybugs hiding in crevices.
