  • Soft, hairy trailing stems
  • Bright red flowers
  • Ideal for hanging pots

Monkey's Tail is a trailing cactus from Bolivia whose long stems are covered in soft, fine white hairs instead of harsh spines. Stems hang down from baskets and tall pots, reaching a metre or more over time, and produce bright red, tubular flowers. It is one of the most unusual and photogenic cacti for hanging displays. You receive one stem, which roots easily to start a new plant.

Light

Bright light with morning sun keeps the hair white and dense.

Watering

Water when the mix is dry; slightly more in summer growth.

Soil & Pot

Gritty mix: about 60–70% mineral (coarse river sand, pumice or perlite, brick chips) and 30–40% coco peat or compost. Terracotta pot with a drainage hole. A hanging basket or tall pot lets stems trail.

Monsoon Care

Keep under a roof or in a bright room from June to September. Water only when the mix is bone dry, and keep air moving around the plant.

Rooting Your Stick

Let the cut end dry for 5–7 days, then set it 2–3 cm deep in dry gritty mix. Water lightly after a week; roots form in 3–4 weeks.

Feeding

Quarter-strength cactus fertiliser (low nitrogen) once a month, February–May and October–November. None during monsoon and peak summer.

Watch Out For

Rot at the cut end if planted wet, mealybugs in the hairs.
