How to Keep Isopods Cool in Indian Summers

Nine practical ways to protect your isopod cultures from Indian summer heat - no AC required.

Quick answer: Keep tubs on the floor of the coolest room, away from windows and direct sun, increase ventilation slightly, and use terracotta or clay pieces inside the tub to buffer temperature swings. Most isopods start struggling above about 30°C for extended periods.

Why Heat Kills Isopods

Isopods breathe through gill-like structures that need moisture to function - heat dries them out faster than they can replace it, and high temperatures also speed up bacterial growth in a damp substrate, creating a second, compounding problem. A tub that's fine at 26°C can crash within a day at 35°C+.

Choosing the Right Spot

Heat rises, so floor level is almost always cooler than a shelf or table. Keep tubs away from west-facing windows that get harsh afternoon sun, away from exterior walls that absorb heat through the day, and well clear of any electronics or appliances that give off heat (never on top of a fridge or router).

Ventilation vs. Evaporation

More airflow cools a tub by letting heat escape, but it also speeds up moisture loss - so increase ventilation and your misting frequency together during peak summer, rather than just adding more holes and letting the substrate dry out. A well-ventilated Ventilated Isopod Tub with a slightly heavier misting schedule works better than a sealed tub baking in the heat.

Terracotta and Clay Tricks

Unglazed terracotta or clay pieces placed in the substrate absorb and slowly release moisture, buffering humidity swings during the hottest part of the day. Some keepers place tubs inside a larger tray with a shallow water layer (without submerging the tub itself) to add passive evaporative cooling to the surrounding air.

Heat-Tolerant Species

If summer heat is your biggest concern, lean toward naturally heat-tolerant species: Dairy Cow and Powder Orange both handle warm rooms noticeably better than high-humidity Cubaris. Save delicate Cubaris morphs for a room you can keep reliably below 28°C.

Shipping in Summer

We dispatch orders Monday to Wednesday only and hold shipments during extreme heatwaves specifically to protect live cultures in transit - ask any seller how they handle summer shipping before ordering during peak heat months.
