Why Isopods Suit Apartments
A thriving isopod colony fits in a tub as small as 3-5 litres, needs no walks, no litter box, and produces no noise or allergens. For apartment living where space and building rules limit conventional pets, a self-contained bioactive tub is about as low-impact as livestock gets.
Kids and Isopods
Isopods are completely harmless - they don't bite or sting - which makes them a good hands-on introduction to biology and responsibility for curious kids. Watching a colony grow, moult and breed over weeks teaches patience and observation in a way that's hard to replicate with a screen.
Time and Cost
Weekly maintenance is minimal: check moisture, top up leaf litter and calcium, offer vegetables a couple of times a week. A full beginner setup costs under Rs.750 with our Isopod Starter Tub, and ongoing costs are close to zero once the enclosure is established.
Best Starter Species
For a kid-friendly first colony, pick a hardy, visually interesting species like Dairy Cow or Orange Dalmatian - active, easy to see moving around, and forgiving of the occasional missed feeding. See our full beginner isopod guide for more options.
