Bromeliads are the signature plants of tropical vivariums. Their stiff rosettes of leaves form a central cup that collects water, creating tiny pools that frogs and invertebrates use in the wild. Many varieties show red, pink or striped tones that intensify in brighter light. They grow happily on wood, cork or rock as well as in substrate, making them one of the most flexible plants for vertical and background displays.
Light
Bright indirect light brings out the strongest colour. Avoid harsh direct sun through glass, which scorches leaves.
Watering
Fill the central cup with clean water and refresh it weekly to stop it going stale. Keep the roots only lightly moist.
Humidity & Airflow
Likes humidity but needs airflow; in sealed tanks, water can rot the base.
Substrate
Plant in a chunky, fast-draining mix (bark, coco husk, a little sphagnum) or mount directly on wood with moss around the roots.
Growth & Propagation
The mother plant produces offsets (pups) at the base. Separate pups once they are a third of the parent's size.
