Sphagnum moss is the easiest way to give isopods a reliable humid zone. Once hydrated, it holds many times its own weight in water and releases it slowly, keeping one part of the enclosure damp while the rest stays drier. Isopods gather under it to moult and breed, and gravid females often release young there. It is also useful for terrariums, plant propagation and packing live animals for transport.
- Soak the amount you need in clean water for 10–15 minutes.
- Squeeze until damp but not dripping.
- Place it in one corner of the enclosure, on top of the substrate or under a hide.
- Re-wet it when it starts to dry; replace it if it turns mouldy or slimy.
Care level: Beginner. Maintain stable humidity and temperature appropriate for this species, provide adequate leaf litter/cover, and avoid sudden environmental swings.
